Kmart opened Australia's first discount department store in Burwood, Victoria in 1969. It was the beginning of an Australian icon that has now become one of Australia's favourite and most recognisable retailers.
Today, Kmart delivers irresistibly low prices through more than 200 stores across Australia and New Zealand. The staff at Kmart work hard to ensure you get the lowest prices possible on the items you and your family need. With a guarantee to match the advertised price on any identical stocked item in-store, it's another way Kmart are helping to deliver great value every day.
As a large retailer, Kmart know they have a responsibility to care and respect our planet. They take this responsibility very seriously and have an opportunity to use their relationships and scale to make a difference. Aware that they can’t address the big sustainable development challenges working alone, that’s why their Better Together sustainable development program is built on partnerships. Kmart believe that by working together and utilising each other's strengths, they can achieve better outcomes for today and a brighter future for tomorrow. Whether it’s their team, customers, suppliers, non-government organisations, factory workers, trade unions, or the broader community, Kmart work hand-in-hand with partners, treating them with dignity and respect.
From its earliest days, Kmart has been close to the communities where it operates and they support a number of charitable organisations to improve the lives of those who need a helping hand. One of their own, Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal. The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal is Australian and New Zealand’s largest and longest running gift collection appeal. The idea began in 1987 when an Adelaide team member suggested Kmart use its wide network of stores as gift collection points to assist charity groups at Christmas time. From there the Appeal grew and grew to become what it is today. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Australian community, the Appeal has raised more than 8 million gifts that have been distributed to those in need.
Kmart’s overall vision is to provide families with everyday products at the lowest prices. They strive for this vision through high-volume sales, efficient operations, adaptable stores and a great culture.
